The role of the General Director of Opera North is to ensure artistic excellence, financial stability and long-term viability for the organisation through creative vision, business acumen, and confident and inspired leadership. They will possess the skills, flair, imagination and pragmatism of a creative producer and cultural entrepreneur. In collaboration with the Music Director, Executive Director and Management Team, the General Director will develop and oversee the implementation of the artistic and strategic vision across the full range of the company’s activities, ensuring a balance between innovation and tradition, and commercial and charitable aims.

Key priorities are to develop the reputation and reach of the company, growing and diversifying audiences, and extending Opera North’s work in the north of England, developing imaginative collaborations, as well as building the company’s profile and reputation nationally and internationally, and, above all, creating an environment in which all members of the company and its artists are inspired to deliver of their best.

The General Director is the main spokesperson and figurehead for Opera North, communicating the company’s mission and values internally to staff and externally to stakeholders and the wider world.
