Schubert: Die schöne Müllerin, D.795

Irish tenor Eamonn Mulhall and pianist Niall Kinsella perform Schubert’s first iconic song-cycle, Die schöne Müllerin. Composed in 1823, this beloved cycle explores themes of unrequited love, jealousy and heartbreak as a young man falls in love with a Miller’s daughter over the course of twenty songs. In Die schöne Müllerin, Schubert takes inspiration from folksong, and fashions these songs into a narrative that explores a wide variety of scenes and emotions. Die schöne Müllerin would become a blueprint for his later song-cycle, and arguably his greatest work, Winterreise.

Irish tenor Eamonn Mulhall has performed for many of Europe’s leading opera companies, including the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Scottish Opera, Grange Park Festival, Opera Theatre Company, Opera Ireland and Irish National Opera. Most recently he peformed in Amadeus at the National Theatre, on tour and in live cinema screenings, and the role of Hippolyte in Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie with the the Baroque Festival Orchestra of Krakow at the Krakow Congress Centre. As a committed recitalist, Eamonn has given song recitals in Wexford; St Martin-in-the-Fields, London; Scotland and Belgium. He has broadcast live on BBC Radio3 and RTÉ Lyric fm.

Irish pianist Niall Kinsella has established himself as one of the most exciting accompanists of his generation. A graduate of the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna and the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin, Niall has partnered many of Ireland’s leading singers and performed extensively abroad, at the Musikverein Vienna, Wiener Konzerthaus, St. Martin-in-the-Fields London, The Liszt Academy Budapest and regularly in Ireland’s leading venues. In February 2020, he will record a CD of Schubert lieder for Viennese record label Gramola Klassik.
