Garden of Earthly Delights

Garden of Earthly Delights

Thursday, 30 May 2019, 8.00pm

Join Dun Laoghaire Choral Society as they take a musical journey through the "Garden of Delights".

The performance will be in front of a dynamic visual backdrop of Bosch's painting "The Garden of Earthly Delights", whose images will change to reflect the music being sung. Directed by John Doyle and accompanied by Fergal Caufield and Deirbhile Brennan, this 60 strength choir will perform a wide range of choral music from the Masters.

The concert starts in the darkness of Hades with a section from Monteverdi’s Choruses from “Orpheo ed Euridice”, moving to a piece from Brahms Requiem.

A short madrigal from Thomas Morley followed by a selection of Brahms' Waltzes and Schumann's "Die Orange" lift the atmosphere to reflect the romance and wonder of Earth. We are also delighted to be performing a piece written by Tom Lane for the choir as well as singing a selection of choral works from Finzi.

The performance finishes in the beauty of Eden. Mendelsshohns "Verleih uns Frieden" sets the tone followed by the haunting wonder of Lauridsen’s “O Magnum Mysterium” , finishing with Faure’s inspired “In Paridisum” from his Requiem in D minor.

The concert also includes a wonderful solo piano performance by Deirbhile Brennan of Liszt’s “Après une Lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonato”
