ZOOM LUTE WORKSHOP with Peppe Frana
Saturday 22 May 11:00 am – 12:30 PM

This is a live Zoom workshop, but if you can’t attend for any reason (such as your time zone), we will be recording the workshop and making it available to all who register.

The workshop will offer an overview of the plectrum-lute repertoire with a comparative approach to the plectrum technique of extra-European plucked chordophones such as oud, Afghan robab, tanbur, etc.

The workshop is aimed at both amateur and professional medieval music performers and Renaissance lute players who want to approach plectrum technique.

Main themes covered:
Monody and diminutions: Plectrum technique – Ornamentation – Musical analysis of 14th-century Italian monodic repertoire and selected examples from the Codex Faenza.
Intabulations: Plectrum-finger technique – Strumming – Intabulation techniques and musical analysis of early 15th-century keyboard repertoire in comparison with the intabulations of the Wolfenbüttel fragment.
