The BBC National Orchestra of Wales holds is seeking a Assistant Stage and Technical Manager (Production Management Assistant).

The Assistant Stage & Technical Manager assumes a vital role, closely collaborating with the Stage & Technical Manager, in overseeing the day-to-day staging, logistical operations, and management of the Orchestra’s activities and studios, both at Hoddinott Hall and during travel. This role, reporting to the Stage & Technical Manager as part of the Operations Team, ensures the smooth execution of rehearsals, concerts, recording sessions, and external events in the United Kingdom and overseas. The Assistant Stage & Technical Manager should possess a comprehensive understanding of orchestra stage layouts and demonstrate proficiency in driving the orchestra truck. Due to the nature of the job, unsociable hours may be required (including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends), with compensatory time off provided.

Candidates should possess a clean C+E (HGV1) driving license and a current Driver Qualification Card. They should have a significant amount of experience driving HGV1 vehicles in the United Kingdom and abroad, and have previously been involved in live stage management. This includes having a sound understanding of sound, lighting, and audiovisual elements. A deep knowledge of orchestras is also essential, which means understanding orchestrations, musical instruments, and the appropriate layout of orchestras.

The position also requires familiarity with the safe and careful handling, packing, and transport of valuable musical instruments, including those that may be large and heavy. Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, are also necessary. The ability to establish effective short-term and long-term relationships with a diverse range of individuals is a key requirement for this role.
