PRONOIA - Robert Curgenven/Kat McDowall (AGENESIS) + Josh Warry + Syn + Flowers at Night

Thursday, 4 July 2019, 8.00pm

PRONOIA brings four exciting Cork acts – new and old residents along with those born and bred both in the city and the county - to the mighty sound and lighting system at Cyprus Avenue. Pronoia, the direct opposite of paranoia, is a psychological term to describe a suspicion that the Universe is conspiring to make you happy. Come on the 4th July for a pronoiac experience of your own, as your enjoyment becomes more than just a suspicion…

Robert Curgenven’s new piece, AGENESIS, with Kathleen McDowall is presented for the first time at Cyprus Avenue, the week before its summer festival debut at Gamma Festival in Russia for SHAPE platform – also the EU platform’s only Irish-based act. AGENESIS is a 1:1 relationship between sound and lighting - combining lights and projections driven directly by the sound to create a head-wrecking synaesthetic experience with the spontaneous production of colours and patterns. Following previous Cork Midsummer Festival shows and appearances at Open Ear (Sherkin Island) and Cork Sound Fair, this set brings turntables, dubplates & acetates, custom-made oscillators, mixing desk feedback and strong sub-bass together to create polyrhythmic phasing in light and sound that collapse depth perception and bring your whole body and the surrounding room into a face-melting physical constellation.

New to Cork, Josh Warry follows a triumphant set for Cork Sound Fair at the Circus Factory in March with his crushing and turbulent granular sound that plunges ears and bodies into an intricate mass of Shrapnel and Soil.

Cork born and bred, SYN's musical style would suggest differently. Her hard drum, club-driven compositions take inspiration from an international array of styles from Portugal's Kuduro to NYC's Vogue scene. Over the past few years she’s been garnering attention on her own Flood label with collaborators Doubt and Tension. With her club-ready material heard via platforms such as Ashida Park and Sans Absence, SYN has been creating a strong impression performing at nights like Club Comfort, Gash Collective and Even The Strong. http://www.facebook.com/synirl

Hailing from Sherkin Island, Flowers at Night is the music of Juno Cheetal. Characterising her shadowy sound is strings, looped bass and guitar, combining layers of lush vocal harmonies and vintage 80s synths including her namesake the Roland Juno-106 in addition to Jupiter 8, Mini Moog, 808 and 909 drum machines plus autoharp and field recordings. With an inspiration coming from 80s instrumental B-sides and film soundtracks, she also composes music for theatre and short films.
