Call for Articles and Works

Call for Articles and Works

Thursday, 31 December 2020, 5.00pm

OVER Journal is a new periodical publication and online platform that proposes to its readers a deep, honest, critical and edifying experience of Photography and Visual Culture.

OVER Journal is interested in challenging and preventing the repetition of obsolete and flawed structures, as much as highlighting the work of those who are expanding what we still call Photography into new horizons. The journal is a space for reflection on new practices, new voices, new ways of thinking.

Articles may be critically focused on aspects often overlooked that affect the discipline, zooming out to observe the whole scene, to analyse what exactly is happening, and what power relationships are at play.

We accept submissions by email to info [at] of proposals for articles and interviews, and submissions of artistic work strictly under the following conditions described below – we will not consider submissions that ignore these simple terms.

1. Call for Articles
The editorial team of OVER Journal welcomes submissions for articles or interviews for consideration, whether at proposal stage or completed, by individuals or collaborators including journalists, writers, researchers, artists, curators, and other professionals such as designers, architects, urban planners, community activists, etc. whose critical practice is connected with issues of social change.

We favour articles and interviews that are based on a critique and analysis of the socio-political context in which image-based practices currently sit, and not just about the output of artists, exhibiting venues, and publishing houses. In addition, we welcome proposals from any discipline that bring to the fore socially engaged projects in any aspect of cultural or creative practices.

To submit, please email us in .pdf, .doc, or .docx format:
– One file with your one page Bio/CV, and a brief synopsis of the proposed article or interview (up to 200 words).
– In the case of submitting a completed article or interview – a second file with the completed article or interview.
– For proposals, you must provide examples of previously written work whether published or not.
– For interviews, you must provide a Bio of the interviewee, and evidence of permission to publish from the interviewee.
Submissions are free and, upon selection, a fee will be agreed with applicants, who will have up to a month to produce the piece, with an agreed word limit.

Accepted submissions will be published either through or in the printed journal, depending on the editorial decision, either in full or abridged.

2. Call for Works
The editorial team of OVER Journal welcomes submissions of artistic projects by creatives, photographers, visual artists, curators, researchers, thinkers, and any individuals working in and around contemporary image-based practices, for consideration. We welcome work-in-progress, unfinished, and experimental projects, as well as finished and complete bodies of work. We welcome from one-image works to complex large scale projects.

This call aims to represent the wealth and diversity of critical practices that constitute the contemporary global photographic community. Accepted submissions will be published either through or in the printed journal, depending on the editorial decision.

To submit, please email us one PDF file containing:
– A one page Bio/CV.
– A brief synopsis of up to 200 words.
– Images representing the Artworks
– Extra details such as installation documentation, and link to articles, further reading, social media, video sites, etc.

It is advisable to compress PDFs with services like to significantly reduce file size, knowing that we will not necessarily judge a submission more positively because it contains hi-res files. We will make sure we look at work at adequate resolutions when needed.

Submissions are free and we pay fees to all contributors.

Deadline: Submissions are open and ongoing.
