Joseph Leighton Quartet @ Brilliant Corners Jazz Festival
Joseph Leighton is one of the finest young guitarists on the Irish jazz scene toady. Selected as one of Moving on Music’s ‘Emerging Artists’ in 2016, Joseph was one of the youngest musicians ever to be awarded a place at the Banff Centre, Canada. Having since studied with the likes of David Lyttle, Mike Walker and Jesse Van Ruller, Leighton has swiftly developed his own voice, mixing traditional and contemporary approaches and performing a combination of jazz standards with original material.
This concert will see Joseph joined by some of his favourite and most admired musicians such as London based saxophonist, Julian Siegel and MOBO nominated drummer David Lyttle, who he recently has toured with as a duo in the Middle East. Conor Chaplin from Dinosaur will return to the Brilliant Corner’s stage on bass to complete Leighton’s star-studded line up.
As well as reimagining traditional repertoire, this innovative new quartet will premiere Joseph’s commissioned composition, titled ‘Submerged Suite’, kindly supported by PRSF. We are really looking forward to this one!
“…the guitarist has at least one foot in the modernists’ camp. The other is firmly planted in a tradition that stretches from Jim Hall to Pat Metheny” – All About Jazz
‘Joseph Leighton acquits himself superbly… a unique onstage presence through casual appearance and understated instrumental command.” – The Big List
