Research Associate (AHRC Project: Music, Migration and Mobility)

Wednesday, 4 September 2019, 9.00am

Royal College of Music invites applications to the position of Research Associate (AHRC Project: Music, Migration and Mobility).

The Music, Migration and Mobility project will investigate and map the journeys of approximately 30 musicians as they negotiated and helped to form aspects of British musical life in the post-war period. The project will also probe the practical challenges of performing and mediating their compositions-which are defined by multiple trans-national cultural influences and traditions-through a programme of experimental rehearsal workshops and concerts and explore the cultural value of this music for contemporary audiences.

Fluent in written German, the Music, Migration and Mobility Research Associate will be responsible for undertaking archival research in a number of designated archives in the UK, Germany and Austria including case studies of migrant musicians at Glyndebourne and the Anglo-Austrian Music Society. The post-holder will also write biographical texts, gather data and undertake research and oral history interviews to inform performance workshops, the development of an online resource and the project’s mapping project using ESRI Story Maps. The post-holder will be supported to present their research at national and international conferences.

We are looking for candidates with the following attributes:
– You will have a PhD in music, history or a relevant subject area
– You will have the ability to read accurately manuscript and printed 20th century archival materials in German and translate them into English
– You will have proven experience in archival research, creating data sets, interpreting data and writing research outputs
