DCU Doctoral Scholarship in Music

The School of Theology, Philosophy, and Music at DCU invites applications for a PhD Scholarship for entry in Autumn 2022.

Closing date: Wednesday March 31st 2022

Full-time Scholarships include a full fee waiver and a tax-free scholarship of €16,500 per annum for four years. Click here for further information on the call and the application documents required to apply for a scholarship in Music.

The School of Theology, Philosophy, and Music at Dublin City University, ranked as one of the top 100 universities under 50 as per Times Higher Education, is a dynamic and creative learning environment with a strong commitment to social and cultural engagement, and world-class research. The academic study of Music in DCU engages with a plurality of Music genres, styles, creative practices and contexts with internationally-recognised staff who have distinguished records in research and teaching. Applications for Doctoral Scholarships are welcome in the areas of Musicology, Applied Musicology, Choral Studies, and Practice Based Research. 

Eligibility: Applicants must have an undergraduate degree at first-class honours level or at least 2.1 level in Music, or a related discipline, and a Master’s Degree in Music or a related discipline. Candidates who are currently completing a Master’s qualification are welcome to apply.

The School of Theology, Philosophy, and Music is interested in receiving research proposals across a broad range of music genres, practices and stylistic periods and especially in the areas of:

  • Applied Musicology 
  • Choral Studies 
  • Contemporary Music (including Irish Contemporary Music) 
  • Composition
  • Electroacoustic Music Studies
  • Film Music
  • Historical Musicology
  • Irish Traditional Music
  • Music Analysis
  • Music, Society, and Culture 
  • Popular Music 

The successful applicant will be joining a vibrant international group of scholars with c. 25 doctoral students registered with the School, ranging across theology, ethics, religious studies, philosophy, musicology, and composition. Located on the DCU All Hallows campus, students will work in an inspiring, stimulating environment that both challenges and nurtures critical enquiry. With access to three libraries and the wider resources of the Faculty and the University, students will find excellent sources for their research and academic endeavours.
