Full to the Door
For this recital of music and poetry, Emily Cullen and Síle Denvir explored the legacy of the 1792 Belfast Harp Meeting. Cullen’s new collection of poetry, Conditional Perfect (published by Doire Press) contains works that imagine what those harpers said, or would say – a monologue from the 112-year-old Denis Hempson for example. Cullen’s works interweaved with instrumentals from Denvir, who also sang, and they ended their short performance with a duet. It was another example of the rich range of creativity that the current renaissance of Irish harping is producing. Cullen and Denvir were followed by former Corn Uí Riada winner Nell Ní Chróinín who sang two songs completely solo and captured the audience. The short concert, which was full to the door and took place in the Achill Field School as part of the Achill International Harp Festival, ended with a selection of newly composed tunes by Diarmuid (low whistle) and Donncha (guitar) Moynihan from Cork, who were then joined by their sister Deirdre on fiddle and voice. I was only in Achill for one day and night of this four-day festival but it was notable just how many artists were on the island for the event, and, even in a short concert like this, you could enjoy a great range of music. http://achillharpfestival.ie/
