The NCH Gamelan Orchestra and Gamelan Nua present an evening of contemporary music for gamelan.

Join us for a programme of original gamelan music from Java and Ireland, performed by two of our in-house gamelan orchestras.

The NCH Gamelan Orchestra was established after the National Concert Hall received a specially-built set of gamelan instruments as a gift from His Royal Highness Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X of Yogyakarta, Java. Since that time, the ensemble has performed at festivals across Ireland (Bray Jazz Festival, Monkstown Music Festival, Electric Picnic), and Java (the Yogyakarta International Performing Arts Festival, and the International Gamelan Festival 2018). The NCH Gamelan can also be found on YouTube where their videos have been watched over 35,000 times.

Gamelan Nua is an ensemble made up of composers who write and perform their own music on the National Concert Hall’s unique collection of gamelan instruments. They have collaborated twice with the Irish Composers’ Collective, and with many well-known artists from across Ireland’s diverse musical landscape, including folk singer Catríona O’Leary (Dúlra), organist David Bremner (Christchurch Cathedral), jazz singer Ellen Demos and guitarist Mike Nielsen. This evening they will debut a programme of all original works.

Both gamelan groups can be followed on Facebook. Anyone wishing to get involved with the NCH gamelan instruments should contact education [at] nch.ie.
