The acclaimed fiddle player Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh was commissioned by the Dublin Fringe Festival in 2010 to create a new band. A band the like of which had never been heard before. He settled on three very different musicians – Seán Mac Erlaine – a Dublin jazz musician and composer, Petter Berndalen – a Swedish folk drummer, and Nic Gareiss – an American hard shoe percussive dancer. They were to rehearse and perform once as part of the festival.

Eight years on, This is How we Fly are still going strong, having recorded two albums, as well as a film soundtrack, music for dance, held residencies in institutions such as Princeton and The Irish Arts Centre in the USA, and wowed audiences all over Ireland, the US and Europe.

This November, Islander presents This is How we Fly on tour across Ireland, plus a marquee date in London’s Barbican Centre. They will perform material old and new, with a particular focus on material that will make up their third album, which is being written in conjunction with a residency at Navan’s Solstice Arts Centre.
