Music Generation Laois presents: Harps and Pipes Tionól 2019

Tionól is a weekend of workshops and performances celebrating the harp and uilleann pipes, bringing together young musicians from across Ireland.

Friday 1 November

12noon-2pm: Registration, Portlaoise Further Education and Training Centre (Portlaoise FETC), Tower Hill, Portlaoise, Co. Laois

2-4pm  Instrumental workshops, Pokrtlaoise FETC.

8pm: Tionól 2019 Opening Gala Concert Featuring the world premiere of new music by Maeve Gilchrist performed by the Music Generation Laois Harp Orchestra.

Tlen Huicani – ‘The best folk group of Mexico’, a 5-piece band fronted by Harper Alberto de la Rosa play the music of Veracruz, a region from the gulf of Mexico. Harp is accompanied by small guitars called Jaranas and voices, Tlen Huicani perform happy and festive songs.

New music by Maeve Gilchrist is supported by the Creative Ireland Laois fund.

2pm-4pm  Instrumental Workshops /Reed Making Workshop/ masterclass with Tlen Huicani, Portlaoise FETC 

7pm: Tionól concert featuring young Harpers and Pipers from Music Generation programmes across Ireland, a youth group of harpers from Colombia and Tionól Tutorsincluding Leonard Barry (pipes), William Jackson (harp), Grainne Hambly (harp), Anne-Marie O’Farrell (harp), Deirdre Ní Bhuachalla (harp), Jill Devlin (harp), Lauren O’Neill (harp), Rachel Duffy (harp), Siobhan Buckley (harp), Paul Harrigan (pipes), Tim Doyle (pipes), Mark Redmond (pipes), Peter Browne (pipes), James Mahon (pipes), Kathleen Loughnane (harp) and Maeve Gilchrist (harp)

Sunday 3 November

2pm  Closing Student Concert – Tionól 2019, programme of music made up of repertoire covered throughout Tionol, Portlaoise Further Education and Training Centre (Admission free of charge, donations welcome) 

7pm: Tionól Closing Party featuring Tlen Huicani (Mexico), Andy Bergins Main St, Portlaoise – Free Admission

WORKSHOP STANDARDS: A range of classes are available from recent beginners to advanced. You must have your own instrument to participate. A limited number of harps are available for Music Generation Laois students.

SUPERVISION: Under 18s will be supervised during break times unless alternative arrangements made by parents. Open to ages 7 and upwards. LUNCH IS PROVIDED

FEE: €70
