From the Bridge: a view of Irish traditional music in New York

Wednesday, 29 June 2022, 11.00am

ITMA is excited to announce it will launch a major digital exhibition of Irish traditional music relating to New York on Wednesday 29 June 2022, with support from the Irish Foreign Ministry Government of Ireland - Emigrant Support Programme. The exhibition showcases rare recordings, stories and photographs relating to NYC’s remarkably rich Irish traditional music heritage.

The ‘at-risk’ multimedia materials have now been preserved by ITMA and will be freely accessible online to a global audience thanks to the generosity of collectors, performers, their families, and our funders.

Irish traditional music recorded in New York forms part of an invaluable cultural treasure of national and international significance. The story of how the tradition migrated from rural Ireland to the USA is central to our cultural history, and ITMA is delighted to play its part in shining a light on the people and stories that bind us together as a global traditional music community.

The digital exhibition will be launched in the Irish Traditional Music Archive, 73 Merrion Square, Dublin, by renowned Clare concertina player, Noel, Gradam Ceoil TG4 Musician of the Year.
