John Scott’s irish modern dance theatre returns this November with a dance-opera study of grief, revenge and love built around a soprano, three dancers and live pianist, Richard McGrath. In this new work DIVINE MADNESS by John Scott, he creates his latest work with esteemed Irish soprano Mairead Buicke, currently singing in Wexford Festival Opera’s ’The Veiled Prophet’ and plays Maria Callas in the popular ‘Casta Diva’ concerts at the National Concert Hall and three dancers including Hannah Rogerson, Netherlands based Irish dance performer noted for featuring in a recent Corona’s video; the Galway based dancer and choreographer, Magdelena Hylak; who tours internationally with Nacera Belaza, and the gifted Conor Thomas Doherty, who has performed at Jan Fabre’s 24-hour theatrical orgy, Mount Olympus, a play which is also punctuated with operatic arias – an exhilarating centrepiece of the 2017 Belgrade International Theatre Festival, which gave ravishing arias and ecstatic dances.

DIVINE MADNESS explores the physicality of the soprano in the context of a dance, the singer exploring her practice beyond the concert recital. The sound score centres on using fragmented operatic extracts from arias in a context of exile, loss and revenge, including Ave Maria fromVerdi’s Otello, Vissi d’ Artefrom Puccini’s Tosca, Ebben n'andro lontana from Catalina’s La Wallyand the stunning Song of the Moon from Dvorak’s Rusalka

John Scott regards DIVINE MADNESS as development of his exploration of the tenor in his previous work Heroes from 2015. Divine Madness, is created in partnership with Project Arts Centre, contrasts the energy, physicality and dexterity of young dancers with the soaring vocal virtuosity of one of Ireland’s most exceptional operatic stars.
