Mother of Pearl is the second of twin a production created by pioneering artist and aerialist Emily Aoibheann. It too explores themes of civilisation and nature like part 1 of this twin production Sorry Gold, a recent 5 star hit show at the 25th Dublin Fringe Festival. Honouring the dismantled natural world sacrificed in the name of human progress, Mother of Pearl continues to relinquish the lure of individual glory.
This new experimental circus production sees bodies perform exceptional but abnormal gestures of human beauty and skill, transforming themselves into geological art-forms with the body becoming a landscape to be cultivated.
Evoking a pantheistic and pagan ritual through playful performative gestures, Mother of Pearl is an expression of longing for wildness from within the containment of human domesticity, society and civilization.
Although her expertise lies in circus and aerial dance, Emily Aoibheann’s varied background leads to a highly original integration of multiple art forms. With a personal interest in exploring the ‘What is this space’ or space between, Emily’s work is an arch bridging various artforms. In this regard, her work is at home in the gallery as it is in the black box or circus tent.
Specific to Mother of Pearl is the music, created by Emily in a period from 2008 to early 2009. These recordings, adapted and developed for live performance, illustrate a phenomenon which Emily refers to as ‘bedroom music’, that is, music privately played by post-riot-grrrl musicians in Dublin at that time. This moment, in herstory, also relates to what Emily calls ‘creative ineptitude’: permissive and personal exploration of creativity and creative expression.
Both social and secret, these recordings fall in between collective gathering of creative youth in the city. They occur after the main event, alone or with friends, or strangers in passing. For Emily, these recordings represent a very human timeline, a creative liaison, a haunting, both of her younger self and Dublin city, a decade later.
Elsewhere in Mother of Pearl, physicality becomes geological and mythological: throwing back, further than a full human life; dancing, in rock-time; evoking the anachronistic spirit of circus, while invoking old anthropomorphic ideas of wildness in our beautiful boy figure, Pan, as a traveler to a speculative future, of elemental hyperobjects in a post-natural age.
Wildness is the question. Mother of Pearl considers the importance of wildness to the human psyche and through radical creativity, questions the containers of civilisation, challenging both genre category and audience expectations of theatrical or circus spectacle. As with previous work, Mother of Pearl is beautiful and generous, and brand new. Emily Aoibheann is stand alone in her generation of artists, nationally and internationally.
