Deserves a wider listen
I first heard Joshua Burnside at Other Voices Belfast singing his song about being broke, ‘Nothing For Ye’ and his rebuttal of divisive politics, ‘Red and White Blues’. All the way home on the train, I listened to this recently released album, Live at the Elmwood Hall. It’s the unorthodox way he combines words and music that keeps bringing me back to it, and also the vulnerability of the sentiments, particularly in ‘The Only Thing I Fear’ - ‘The only thing I fear is myself, the voices in the attic were mine’. There’s also this honest bewilderment about the world: ’Came home today/Kids begged on the motorway/And that's all for sports today/This fucking country’, he sings in ’26th street’. I was surprised this album didn’t make the shortlist for either the RTÉ or BBC Folk Awards this year. It deserves a wider listen.
