New music for pipes and quartet
A new work by US composer Dan Lyn for uilleann pipes, string quartet and narrator. Commissioned by the piper David Power, who performed it here with ConTempo and Eamon Hunt. I’m a great admirer of Power’s playing. He’s an expert slow air player and there’s incredible rhythm in his tune playing. In recent years, he has engaged in a number of adventurous works, with composers Linda Buckley and Kevin Volans. Buile Shuibhne makes use of some really creative string writing from Lyn combined with regular ostinatos and slow, complex melodies for the pipes. It’s in several movements, has a dark narrative, which Hunt provides between each movement, and builds to an intense section towards the end, before fading again with the fortunes of the mad King Sweeney after whom the work is named. There’s one more performance of the work this year, taking place at the William Kennedy Piping Festival on 16 November. http://www.armaghpipers.com/wkpf/events.html A well attended lunchtime concert at Clifden Arts Festival.
