A Choral Jamboree
Visiting choir from Cork joins forces with award winning Galway choir for a special once off concert.
On Saturday November 5th at 7.30pm two award winning choirs host a unique concert in St Nicholas Church.
Viva Voce, from Cork, are a mixed voice choir established in 2003 under its current musical director Bernadette Kiely.
Viva Voce has won awards at festivals including Limerick Choir Festival; winning Sacred and Mixed Voice competitions at Feis Maitiu Cork; winners of the trophy for Irish Contemporary Music at the Cork International Choral Festival in 2008 and 2009; winners of the National Mixed Voice Competition at the Cork International Choral Festival in 2014, 2016 and 2022. In 2017 they performed the Faure Requiem in Dunmore, Co. Galway and Cork, sharing the platform with choirs from Dunmore and Rome. In 2019 national choral organisation ‘Sing Ireland’ commissioned a work called “An Island Sings”, with Viva Voce being one of four choirs from Ireland invited to perform this commission in the National Concert Hall, Dublin.
Joining Viva Voce and hosting this concert is the University of Galway Alumni Ensemble.This group are celebrating 20 years of singing together and the group consist of graduates of NUIG mainly from the mid noughties. The group, under the direction of Peter Mannion, have performed and won prizes at many choral festivals both in Ireland and abroad, winning the National Chamber Choir title from the Cork Choral Festival in 2019 and this year have performed at festivals in Cardiff, Cork and Derry. During lockdown the group created a number of virtual choir videos. The ensembles version of Red Cortina by the Saw Doctors was viewed tens of thousands of times.
The concert will feature a large variety of music ranging from Mozart to the Spice Girls. There will also be a number of special guests that will perform at the concert.
Tickets are €12.50 with proceeds going to Cancer Care West.
