TONOS New Composition from the Academy

In TONOS, four Irish World Academy Arts Practice PhD students – Niamh O’Brien, Kevin McNally, Eugene Murphy and JJ Riordan – present original compositions that resonate in various ways with their diverse research interests.

Niamh O’Brien is a harp player, singer and radio producer. Her compositions explore the emerging genre of live sound documentary, bringing together live music, recorded interviews and field recordings.

Kevin McNally is a musician from west Cork with particular interests in Javanese Gamelan, classical guitar and community music. His current research explores sound as a way of forging connections between humans and their environment.

Eugene Murphy’s compositional work employs processes of interdisciplinarity and indeterminacy in the development of collaborative work in an inter-arts context. Eugene has a particular interest in the interaction of piano and voice, and its relationship with dance/movement.

JJ Riordan is a Found Sound composer, who uses everyday items, places and spaces, integrated with the common, idiomatic playing styles of many instruments in his compositions. His Found Sound compositions have been watched over 12 Million times on a variety of social media platforms.

Admission is free and all are welcome.
