Rhiannon Giddens, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, Irish Chamber Orchestra - 'Sounding Sionna'
Part of the University of Limerick's 50th anniversary celebrations, 'Sounding Sionna' is a concert highlighting the creativity and spirit of collaboration that lies at the heart of the UL campus. Devised to showcase the outstanding performers and musicians who make UL their home and who visit to share their knowledge, this gala event will feature performances from newly-appointed Artist in Residence at UL's Irish World Academy, the Grammy-winning singer/musician Rhiannon Giddens; the premiere of a newly-commissioned anthem for UL by alumnus and Hollywood composer, Patrick Cassidy entitled 'Beatha an Scoláire' will be performed by the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Kerry singer Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh and the UL Choir. A newly choreographed piece by Irish World Academy lecturer and former Riverdance lead Breandán de Gallaí, based on Vivaldi's aria 'Vedro con mio diletto' will also be included. This piece will feature sean nós singers, medieval and baroque song with traditional dance, echoing the vision of the Irish World Academy's late founder/director Micheal O Suilleabhain - and celebrating the music and dance culture of the world equally'.
