Music Network presents: Cello Quartet – William Butt, Rosalie Curlett, Martin Johnson & Ailbhe McDonagh

Saturday, 10 October 2020, 8.00pm

Music Network presents four masterful cellists performing together for the first time this October.

With its sonorous tone, swan-like elegance and an expressive range that gives the human voice a run for its money, no other instrument manages to play on our heart strings quite like the cello.

William Butt, Rosalie Curlett, Martin Johnson and Ailbhe McDonagh are four masterful cellists who’ll be setting off to perform together for the first time on this six-date Music Network tour.

Along the route they’ll be taking full advantage of the opportunity to show us what this beautiful instrument is capable of. Audiences can look forward to splendid arrangements of works by Bach, Beethoven and Bartók, sultry moods in Piazzolla’s Libertango, the soaring beauty of Mozart’s Ave verum corpus, a fiery exchange between two cellos in Barrière’s popular Sonata, as well as Debussy’s uber-romantic Clair de lune and Gershwin’s jazz-infused favourites from Porgy and Bess. Contemporary music for this unusual combo is well catered for in Ailbhe McDonagh’s own Cellango and a new Music Network commission by Conor Linehan.

For an instrument that’s so at home powering the orchestra’s engine room, the cello sure knows how to shine under the spotlight.
