Ten Good Reasons to Sing Out Of Tune

Ten Good Reasons to Sing Out Of Tune

Wednesday, 22 February 2023, 10.00am

Join us in the Harty Room in QUB’s Harty Room in the Music Department to explore the implications that tuning (or the lack of it) has on live performance. How can we tell what sounds 'right'?

We are collaborating with Dr Trevor Agus, senior lecturer in the Sonic Arts Research Centre at Queen’s University Belfast, to deliver a seminar exploring the different systems and temperaments used to tune instruments throughout different eras of history.

Delving into the grey area between art and science, we will explore the scientific theory and methodology behind tuning and delve into musical theories and treatise, and will explore which tuning systems work best for the performance of different styles and musical periods, for opera and other genres of classical music too.

Tickets are free but must be booked in advance via the link. School and student groups welcome.
