Schumann Quartet

Schumann Quartet

Tuesday, 19 September 2023, 7.30pm

Part of the Wigmore Hall Festival at the Royal Irish Academy of Music to launch the Whyte Recital Hall, Ireland's new purpose built chamber music venue.

“without doubt one of the very best formations among today’s abundance of quartets” (Süddeutsche Zeitung). The widely admired German ensemble brings familiar 19th-century works from Dvorak and Schubert alongside a piece by the hugely talented Viktor Ullmann, murdered by the Nazis in Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1944. His Third String Quartet, extraordinarily, was composed in 1943 in another camp – Theresienstadt – one of several pieces he wrote there that have fortunately survived.

PROGRAMME:
DVORAK: No. 8 E-Major Op. 80
VIKTOR ULLMAN: String Quartet No. 3 Op. 46
SCHUBERT: String Quartet No. 13 A minor "Rosamunde" D 804

PERFORMERS:
Erik Schumann (Violin)
Ken Schumann (Violin)
Veit Hertenstein (Viola)
Mark Schumann (Cello)
