The Butlers of Ormonde in Restoration Clonmel

Thursday, 8 July 2021, 1.00pm

The Gregory Walkers with singer Roisin O’Grady will bring music from Ireland, France and England that was connected to Ormonde, his family and his wider cultural world.

This concert will feature music from Ireland, France and England that was connected to James Butler, Duke of Ormonde, his family and his wider cultural world. Featuring music by Henry Purcell, Jean-Baptise Lully, Turlough O’Carolan, Henry Purcell, Francisco Corbetta, Thomas Connellan, and from the Irish Tradition.

James Butler, Duke of Ormonde, built the Main Guard. Representing the new order in Ireland, Ormonde’s family were musical. They were close to James II and he was entertained in the Main Guard in 1689. After the Restoration of Charles II in 1660 the power and prestige of the Duke of Ormonde increased. The Main Guard represented a new order in Ireland – as exemplified by Ormonde’s serving as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
