Buile Suibhne (The Madness of Sweeney)
Buille Suibhne (The Madness of Sweeney) is a medieval Irish tale about the eponymous king who suffers psychological trauma during battle. The story follows his life dealing with the consequences, while searching for a means of salvation. It is a complex story dealing with many issues of mental illness, regression, and the aftermath of trauma.
Lorcán Mac Mathúna (voice, whistle) and Éamonn Galldubh (pipes, saxophone, guitar, flute) explore these complex issues with reflective and tragic music. Drawing on stylistic methods and moods of Sean Nós, Flamenco, and Irish traditional dance music, Lorcán and Éamonn present a dramatic and sensitive view of human nature under extremes.
Gaelphobal Thamhlachta and Lorcán Mac Mathúna (commissioned composer), stage the premiere of Buille Suibhne at the Rua Red Theatre, Tallaght, on Friday November 15th.
