Notes & Narratives - Mayo Pipers of the Past
Michael Kelly’s research has identified more than 80 Mayo pipers born pre-1920 (including 15 mentioned by Francis O’Neill). As well as musical dynasties like the Carneys of Irishtown and the travelling Rainey’s, County Mayo can boast such noted pipers as Michael Egan, Michael Wallace, Tom Killeen, Pat Nally and Joe Shannon. Most, however, remain obscure figures. Ironically those who emigrated are better documented. The latter include Thomas Garoghan’s teacher, Patsy Touhey’s teacher and an associate of the Taylor brothers – all three hailing from the same East Mayo parish.
The talk will take place in 15 Henrietta Street, Dublin 1 and will start at 8:30pm on Thursday 18th November 2021. Admission is €10 (concession rate €5).
