The Today programme is the most listened programme on R4 and is the BBC’s flagship news programme. Its ambition is to set the news agenda for the day ahead. It extends its insights and expertise across the widest range of topic areas, scrutinising events and key decision-makers and making full sense of the changing UK and world.

The Executive Editor reports to a Senior News Controller and is a senior editorial role in BBC News and must have a clear vision on how to take the programme forward. They will be tasked with maximising the impact of Today journalism, increasing the listening time of existing listeners and attracting new audiences.

Role Responsibility
– To provide editorial and creative leadership for a team that makes impact through original journalism and creative story-telling.
– To be equally comfortable whether driving forward and making sense of daily news stories or identifying and explaining longer-term themes and trends.
– To originate stories and programme ideas/material; to enthuse and encourage the team to engage in the ideas process
– To set ambitious objectives for staff, and ensuring these objectives are achieved through regular feedback and discussion.
– To maintain an open, collaborative, trusting culture in line with News’ strategy and with the BBC Values.
– To ensure programmes are delivered within budget and in the most cost effective manner possible.

Are you the right candidate?
The successful candidate will be an experienced programme maker displaying high developed journalistic and editorial decision-making. The role requires resilience; confidence; assured leadership with excellent communication skills; an enthusiasm for collaboration with other editors; and a commitment to managing and developing a first rate team.

You’ll to be able to demonstrate:
– Highly developed news and current affairs judgement from extensive experience of broadcast journalism at a senior level
– The ability to make major decisions on matters of editorial sensitivity with authority and under pressure
– Creativity, imagination and flair
– A track record of originating programme ideas/stories that create impact
– An understanding of how to maximise the impact Today’s journalism on BBC News’s digital and audio platforms; on network; and externally
– A high level of editorial awareness and judgement in line with BBC and News Directorate policy
– The ability to manage in a cost effective manner the finances of a complex programme budget
– Passion for a healthy work culture, based on transparency, openness, collaboration, trust and respect
