Notes & Narratives – Seán Doherty: "Patterns in 1001 Gems: Melodic Structures in Irish Traditional Music"
Seán Doherty - "Patterns in 1001 Gems: Melodic Structures in Irish Traditional Music"
Captain Francis O’Neill’s collection 1001 Gems: The Dance Music of Ireland (1907) is so important to the modern performance tradition that it’s sometimes called the Bible or simply, ‘The Book’. Starting as a pandemic project, Seán began to analyse the patterns of repetition in each tune. Over the next year, he first annotated all 365 double jigs, and then the full collection of 1001 tunes and input these data into a giant spreadsheet. This project revealed that four melodic patterns are most common in this repertoire. These patterns occur at different proportions according to tune type (reel, hornpipe, etc.) Seán will demonstrate these patterns through performance on the fiddle as part of this presentation.
Notes & Narratives will take place at Na Píobairí Uilleann, 15 Henrietta Street, Dublin 1, starting at 8:30pm on Thursday 20th July 2023. Admission is €10 (unwaged / student / retired €5). For those unable to attend in person, it will also be live streamed for free through our channel NPU-TV.
Na Píobairí Uilleann presents Notes & Narratives – a series of monthly performance-based lectures on traditional music, song and dance by some of Ireland’s finest traditional artists.
