Coda & The Dave Flynn Choir Project

Coda & The Dave Flynn Choir Project

Thursday, 9 June 2022, 8.00pm

Coda is a group of seven singers from the west of Ireland whose harmonies blend beautifully on a wide-ranging repertoire of acapella arrangements and self-accompanied songs with a traditional Irish twist. Joining them on the night are the combined Hearts Desire Choir from Sligo County Council and the Kieran Quinn Theme Night Choir who will perform a suite of brand new arrangements from the one and only Dave Flynn.

Coda are; Declan Askin, Steve Bryant, Mike Cannon, Alan Drumm, Leonard Kelly, Brian Lennon and Conall Ó Domhnaill. Drawing on vocal talent from the west of Ireland, Coda began developing their own approach to vocal performance several years ago. Their first album ‘mouthmusic’ released in 2013 was produced by Maurice Lennon, and their second album ‘Train of Spirits’ was produced by the legendary Dónal Lunny.

In 2021, Coda was commissioned to arrange and perform songs written by the famous Irish harper and composer, Turlough O’Carolan. They have a newly released album of these songs, featuring Westport-based harpist, Freda Hatton, who will also join them for this performance.
Coda offers an exciting new perspective on traditional and contemporary folk songs, original compositions and popular songs. Their wide-ranging repertoire comprises both acapella arrangements and self-accompanied songs with a traditional Irish twist.

A Coda performance is rare, if not unique – seven singers whose harmonies blend beautifully topped off with multi-instrumentation as part of the package. They are joined for this performance by Westport-based harpist, Freda Hatton.

Dave Flynn is a musician, performer and music teacher, originally from Wexford, now living in Sligo. He has been singing all his life! He studied at Ballyfermot College of Further Education and Newpark Music School, Blackrock. He has played and recorded on both guitar and bass with Paddy Casey, Dave Couse and The Impossibles, The Guggenheim Grotto, Edwyn Collins and many others. A member of the popular Sligo band, Anything Goes, Dave is also an integral member of the Kieran Quinn Theme Night Ensemble.

He is also an in-demand choir director, and has worked on several Hawk’s Well choir projects over the years including; Sligo Sings and Sing For The Hell Of It. He has worked with David Brophy on his hugely popular three-part 2017 RTE series The Choir Of Ages, with whom he still works and he has most recently been working with a new intergenerational choir, Glór Shligigh (co-funded by Music Generation Sligo and the HSE).

As well as running his own music school - Famous Dave Music, in Strandhill - he also works with Music Generation Sligo, teaching a variety of music classes to primary and secondary school classes throughout Co. Sligo.

In late 2021, Hawk’s Well Theatre approached Dave Flynn to commission him to work on a suite of new choral arrangements in 2022. Dave took on the mantle with vigour and produced a gorgeous set of arrangements for a beautiful choice of songs. In this, the premiere of this new work, we are delighted to present the combined Hearts Desire Choir from Sligo County Council and the Kieran Quinn Theme Night Choir who will perform Dave’s arrangements on the night.
‘Sometimes it happens completely out of left field, comes a band that just blows your socks off……. One of the most exciting bands I’ve ever heard. I can’t state too strongly how wonderful I think these guys are’
- Mike Harding, The Mike Harding Folk Show.
