Nicola Benedetti Launches 'Super Strings Sessions' with Sistema Scotland

String sessions for young violin, viola, cello and double-bass players will culminate in a concert in Dundee in October.

Violinst Nicola Benedetti has launched a series of three ‘Super Strings Sessions’ for children of the music programme Sistema Scotland. The educational music sessions will culminate in a Festival of Strings Day at the Caird Hall, Dundee, on Tuesday 9 October.

Benedetti has been involved in Sistema Scotland’s four ’Big Noise’ programmes – in Stirling, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee – for ten years, and has been a board member since 2011. She regularly visits and holds masterclasses for the young musicians.

During the sessions – which are taking place in September and October – the young artists will have the opportunity to play in an ensemble led by Benedetti, perform with her, and be involved in a Q&A discussion with the violinist about string playing.

At the Festival of Strings in Dundee all the young people will have the opportunity to play in an ensemble led by Benedetti and experience a performance by her.

Commenting on her involvement with the scheme, Benedetti said:

Being a ‘Big Sister’ to Big Noise is dear to my heart and I’m fiercely proud of the work I’ve done with Sistema Scotland over the past 10 years including the many visits I have made to perform with the children and learn how they have progressed…. By attending the sessions, children and young people will not only have fun and make new friends but they will also learn to collaborate. I will be working to help improve their playing technique, freedom of expression and command of their instrument so that each element combines individually, and within an ensemble, to create the fullest sound possible.
