Terence Blanchard, Alexandre Desplat and Marc Shaiman Nominated for BAFTA Original Music Award

Terence Blanchard, Alexandre Desplat and Marc Shaiman Nominated for BAFTA Original Music Award

'BlacKkKlansman', 'A Star is Born' and 'Mary Poppins Returns' among nominees for Original Music category; 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and 'A Star Is Born' nominated for multiple awards.

BAFTA has announced the five nominees for the Original Music category of the 2019 Film Awards. They are:

  • BlacKkKlansman – Terence Blanchard
  • If Beale Street Could Talk – Nicholas Britell
  • Isle Of Dogs – Alexandre Desplat
  • Mary Poppins Returns – Marc Shaiman
  • A Star Is Born – Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga and Lukas Nelson

BlacKkKlansman – Terence Blanchard
American jazz trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard has won multiple Grammy Awards for his albums, and Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for his work in the films The Promised Land and 25th Hour

If Beale Street Could Talk – Nicholas Britell
If Beale Street Could Talk composer Nicholas Britell is also a pianist and film producer, having co-produced director Damien Chapelle’s 2014 Whiplash. This is his first BAFTA nomination, though he was nominated for both Academy and Golden Globe Awards for the film Moonlight

Isle Of Dogs – Alexandre Desplat
French film composer Alexandre Desplat has received seven BAFTA nominations, winning three for his scores for The King’s Speech (2011), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2015) and The Shape of Water (2017)  as well as two Academy Awards, two Golden Globes and two Grammy Awards. 

Mary Poppins Returns – Marc Shaiman
Marc Shaiman is a composer and lyricist for film, television and theatre and is best known for the Broadway musical Hairspray for which he won a Grammy Award. The score of Mary Poppins Returns will be his first BAFTA nomination, but he has been nominated for five Academy Awards and has been musical director of a number of Academy Award shows. 

A Star Is Born – Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga and Lukas Nelson
Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga and Lukas Nelson are nominated together for A Star Is Born; also nominated for a Grammy Award and winner of a Golden Globe for the song ‘Shallow’. 

Multiple nominations for Bohemian Rhapsody and The Favourite
Films with a strong emphasis on music also received multiple nominations: A Star Is Born (dir. Bradley Cooper) is nominated for Best Film, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Leading Actress (Lady Gaga), Leading Actor (Bradley Cooper), Original Music and Sound, and Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody is nominated for Outstanding British Film, Leading Actor (Rami Malek), Cinematography, Editing, Costume Design, Make Up & Hair and Sound.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite – co-produced by Irish production company Element Pictures and shot by cinematographer Robbie Ryan – received the most nominations with a total of 12, including Cinematography, Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Actress (Olivia Colman) and two nominations for Best Supporting Actress (Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone).
