Arts Council Announces €47.4m in Strategic Funding for 2022

Increases for music, opera and traditional arts organisations including Irish National Opera and the Irish Traditional Music Archive.

The Arts Council has announced the results of its Strategic Funding scheme, which supports key organisations in the arts in Ireland.

A total of €47.4m was allocated across all art forms, including institutions such as the Abbey Theatre (€7.5m), the Gate Theatre (€2.3m) and Druid Theatre (€1.17m).

In the music sector, recipients include Irish National Opera, which received €4.32m, an increase of 10% on last year’s funding; Wexford Festival Opera, which received €1.64m, an increase of 2%; and Irish Chamber Orchestra which received €1.24m, an increase of 3%. Other recipients in the music category include Music Network (€670k), Chamber Choir Ireland (€625k), West Cork Music (€445k), Contemporary Music Centre (€415k), Irish Baroque Orchestra (€340k), Sing Ireland (€315k), Improvised Music Company (€303k), First Music Contact (€210k) and National Youth Orchestra of Ireland (€65k).

In the traditional arts category, recipients include the Irish Traditional Music Archive, which received €950k, an increase of 10%; Na Píobairí Uilleann, which received €520k, an increase of 4%; Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy, which received €100k, the same amount as last year; and Cairdeas na bhFidiléirí, which received €50k, an increase of 13%.

Commenting on the funding, Maureen Kennelly, Director of the Arts Council, said:

Our strategic funding decisions will enable people of all ages and from all backgrounds to experience the very best of the arts. The recipient organisations range across galleries, festivals, choirs, publishers, studios, theatres and venues and their work will ensure that the public has access to high quality artistic expression in every part of Ireland.

Professor Kevin Rafter, Chair of the Arts Council, added:

Receiving funding of €130m for 2022 has allowed the Arts Council to invest in arts organisations across the country. This funding for 106 organisations means local communities all over Ireland will be able to access great art throughout the year.
