Christine Sisk Appointed Acting CEO of Culture Ireland

After the departure of Eugene Downes in May, the board of Culture Ireland have announced Christine Sisk as acting CEO.

The board of Culture Ireland, the organisation responsible for the promotion of Irish arts overseas, has announced Christine Sisk as its new acting CEO. The appointment follows the departure of Eugene Downes when his contract was not renewed at the end of May. The choice of Sisk to take over the role reflects the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht’s recent announcement that it was seeking make an internal appointment — Sisk has been with Culture Ireland since 2005, most recently as Director of Grant Programmes.

An Arts graduate of UCD, with a Diploma in Art History from Trinity College, Dublin, Sisk once established a committee at the Office of Public Works to manage the state art collection. She also chaired a committee on the Per Cent for Art Scheme, co-ordinated the cultural programme of Ireland’s EU presidency in 2004, and from 2002 to 2005 was the National Delegate to the EC Culture Affairs Committee.

Chair of Culture Ireland, the composer Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, described Sisk as ‘visionary and innovative’, though stressed that the appointment was for an interim period. Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, welcomed the appointment and described Sisk as ‘a key part of the Culture Ireland success story in recent years’.
