€245k Awarded to Artists and Groups for Musical Instruments

Music Capital Scheme recipients include Fiachra de hOra, Aoife Ní Bhriain, Na Píobairí Uilleann and Girls Rock Dublin.

Music Network has announced the recipients of the 2019 Music Capital Scheme. The scheme, funded by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, provides funding for high-quality musical instruments for music groups and for individual artists performing at a professional level. The overall amount for 2019 is €245,440.

A total of €82,040 was awarded to nineteen artists. Among the recipients are violist Fiachra de hOra, Baroque flautist Miriam Kaczor, harper Síle Denvir, violinist Aoife Ní Bhriain, concertina player Pádraig Rynne, trumpeter David Collins, and violist Beth McNinch.

Thirty-four music groups received a total of €163,400, including Na Píobairí Uilleann, Girls Rock Dublin, Macnas, Irish Association of Youth Orchestras, Artane School of Music, Sing Out with Strings, Le Chéile Secondary School Orchestra, and Coláiste Eoin.

Commenting on the initiative, Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Josepha Madigan TD said:

The 2019 round of the Music Capital Scheme will again benefit so many deserving organisations and individuals… I see it as one of our key funding initiatives year on year. Lack of a decent instrument should not be an impediment to the development of a clearly gifted individual or indeed the development of numerous bands and groups who repay our faith tenfold through their engagement with their local communities. The social and health benefits of learning to play a musical instrument have long since been established and I am thrilled that my Department plays a part in this.
