Upcoming performances include Culture Night in Offaly on 23 September, RTÉ Concert Orchestra Presents in October, and the Sunday Miscellany concert in December.

RTÉ has announced the appointment of Gavin Maloney as Associate Principal Conductor of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra for the next three years.

Maloney has had a long association with RTÉ, conducting the former RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and the Concert Orchestra on many occasions over the past two decades. From Dublin, he studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and the Mozarteum University Salzburg and was Assistant Conductor of the RTÉ NSO between 2004 and 2007. He has since conducted all the leading orchestras and ensembles in Ireland as well as conducting in Germany, France, Italy and the UK. Most recently he conducted the National Symphony Orchestra and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra as part of their summer concerts at the NCH.

Maloney has collaborated with a range of artists including Gabriela Montero, Tara Erraught, Chloë Hanslip, Maxim Vengerov, Liam O’Flynn, Paddy Moloney, Zoë Conway, Iarla Ó Lionáird and Denise Chaila. He has also recorded on NMC (Donnacha Dennehy’s Elastic Harmonic), the RTÉ Lyric FM label (work by Dennehy and Volans) and Navona Records (Jane O’Leary’s From Sea-Grey Shores) and he gave the world premieres of Bill Whelan’s Linen and Lace with Sir James Galway in 2014 and Ryan Molloy’s Gealán at the RTÉ Lyric FM 20th birthday concert in 2019. He also conducted a number of concerts in the Composing the Island series in 2016, and has premiered a range of work at the New Music Dublin festival.

Maloney’s first appearance as Associate Principal Conductor of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra was for a preview screening of The Irish Civil War – Episode 2 in Cork Opera House on 13 September. His next performance will be conducting the orchestra and guests in a Culture Night concert at Lough Boora bog, Co. Offaly, on 23 September, which will be live on RTÉ One. He will also conduct the RTÉ Concert Orchestra Presents programme on RTÉ Radio 1 on the October Bank Holiday and the Sunday Miscellany concert on 1 December at the NCH. On the St Patrick’s Day weekend, Maloney will conduct a live collaboration between the orchestra and Moving Hearts, which takes place on 17 and 18 March at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre.

Commenting on his appointment, Maloney said:

I’m very pleased to assume the position of Associate Principal Conductor of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. I have for some time enjoyed a close association with these wonderful musicians. This is an exciting moment to take on this role, and I relish the prospect of working with orchestra and management at a time of great change and opportunity in the world of orchestral music. I look forward to connecting with audiences new and old in the coming years, and experiencing the magic of music together.

His appointment follows the appointment of Stephen Bell as Principal Guest Conductor and Guy Barker as Associate Artist, both earlier this year.
