Irish National Opera’s (INO) production of Vivaldi’s L’Olimpiade, directed by Daisy Evans, has been nominated for Best New Opera Production at the 2025 Olivier Awards. A co-production with the Royal Ballet and Opera (Covent Garden) and Nouvel Opéra Fribourg, the production was staged at the Royal Opera House’s Linbury Theatre in collaboration with the Irish Baroque Orchestra.

The Olivier Awards recognise outstanding work in West End theatre, dance and opera. This is INO’s third nomination in recent years for a co-production with the Royal Opera House, followingLeast Like The Other: Searching for Rosemary Kennedy in 2023 and Bajazet in 2022, the latter of which won an award for conductor Peter Whelan and the Irish Baroque Orchestra.

Commenting on the nomination, INO Artistic Director Fergus Sheil said, ‘I’m thrilled that the brilliance, skill and dedication of all the singers, musicians, technical crew and creative artists from our 2024 production of L’Olimpiade have been recognised. This is our third London production in a row presented in partnership with the Royal Ballet and Opera to be nominated for an Olivier Award, which is testament to the quality of Irish opera in recent years.’

Oliver Mears, Director of Opera at the Royal Ballet and Opera, added, ‘Daisy Evans’ dynamic staging brought to life one of Vivaldi’s lesser-known works, perfect for the intimate space of our Linbury Theatre. We are very proud of our production of L’Olimpiade with co-producers Irish National Opera, and so it is wonderful for the hard work of so many people to be recognised through this nomination.’

Aliye Cornish Moore, CEO of the Irish Baroque Orchestra, described the nomination as ‘a testament to the talent, dedication, and passion of IBO’s musicians, Peter Whelan’s artistic direction, and our creative partners at Irish National Opera.’

The winners of the 2025 Olivier Awards will be announced on Sunday 6 April at the Royal Albert Hall. INO’s next production, The Flying Dutchman by Richard Wagner, will run at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in Dublin from 23 to 29 March.
