Jaime Martín Announced as Chief Conductor of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra
RTÉ have announced Jaime Martín as Chief Conductor of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. His appointment is for three seasons beginning this September.
Martín is a Spanish conductor and flautist, is Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of Gävle Symphony Orchestra in Sweden, and will also take up the position of Music Director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra in the 2019/20 season. He first conducted the RTÉ NSO in October 2016 in a performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 11 and has performed a further three times with the orchestra.
Speaking about the announcement, Martín said,
Having worked with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra on several occasions I am hugely impressed by the players’ flexibility and commitment to the music. Even more exciting is their palpable joy of sharing what happens on the stage with the audience, producing amazing moments of energy and intensity.
I am very excited to join the RTÉ NSO at a time of change and development. We will endeavour to make the music world aware of the quality of this special group of musicians and at the same time make our loyal audience in Dublin and Ireland proud of their national orchestra.
Martín has previously worked with orchestras such as the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie. He has just completed a nine-concert tour of Europe in December with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
The RTÉ NSO has been without a Chief Conductor since Alan Buribayev’s term ended in 2016. Commenting on Martín’s appointment, Anthony Long, General Manager of the RTÉ NSO, said:
It is with enormous pleasure that I welcome Jaime Martín’s appointment as Chief Conductor of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. In his international career and in his performances to date with the RTÉ NSO, Jaime has shown himself to be an immensely gifted conductor and a natural and charismatic communicator. He joins us at a time of great opportunity and we look forward to working closely with him.
