James Morrison Traditional Music Festival

The festival includes events held in the the recently opened Morrison Teach Ceoil, a cottage museum dedicated to the life and music of the Sligo musician who emigrated to the USA.
 

Taking place in Riverstown, County Sligo, the James Morrison Traditional Music Festival takes place on 29—31 July this year. The festival includes events held in the the recently opened Morrison Teach Ceoil (pictured), a cottage museum dedicated to the life and music of the musician.

Over a dozen musicians will perform at the James Morrison Commemorative Concert, which is held on the opening night. Workshops in accordion, fiddle, flute, banjo and sean nós dancing will be held on the Saturday afternoon. Sessions, ceilis, a symposium about the Collooney musician Eugene Nellany and a talk by Séamus MacMathúna will also form part of the festival.

Morrison (1893—1947), known as ‘The Professor’ was born near the South Sligo town but emigrated to the United States as a young man. As well as being known for his fiddle, flute, banjo and accordion playing, Morrison is remembered for teaching traditional Irish music playing to hundreds of students in America.
