Journal of Music Editor to Give ‘Notes & Narratives’ Lecture

Toner Quinn's talk will be titled '10 Impossible Ideas for Irish Traditional Music'.

The Editor of The Journal of Music, Toner Quinn, will give a lecture next week as part of Na Píobairí Uilleann’s ‘Notes & Narratives’ series.

The title for the talk is ‘10 Impossible Ideas for Irish Traditional Music’ and Quinn will put forward ten suggestions for the future of the music. Commenting on the event, he said:

We have seen a lot of ‘impossible’ things happen in music and the arts in Ireland in recent years, so I want to explore how ambitious ideas emerge and how they can be developed in the future. The ideas I shall be putting forward relate to everything from funding to education and from broadcasting to housing and all are ‘impossible’ – or are they? I’m looking forward to journeying a little into the world of the impossible at Na Píobairí Uilleann and discussing these ideas with others.

The talk will take place at Na Píobairí Uilleann’s premises at 15 Henrietta Street, Dublin 1, on Thursday 24 November at 8.30pm–10pm, and the event will also be available to view online at www.pipers.ie.

Na Píobairí Uilleann’s ‘Notes & Narratives’ series is a monthly series of lectures on traditional music, song and dance. Recent speakers include Edwina Guckian, Caoimhín MacAoidh, Martin McGinley, Nicholas Carolan and Claire Keville.

Quinn is founder and editor of The Journal of Music, a fiddle player, and also a lecturer on the MA in Literature and Publishing at the University of Galway.
