Máire Ní Chéileachair Wins Corn Uí Riada

Cork singer wins premier sean-nós singing competition.

Máire Ní Chéileachair, who was awarded Singer of the Year at the TG4 Gradam Ceoil awards earlier this year, has now also won Corn Uí Riada, the premier award for sean-nós singing which took place on 3 November.

Ní Chéileachair, from Cork, has been runner-up several times in previous competitions. She told the media:

It’s just lovely to have [the cup] and hard to believe… I had no idea, because I was a bit nervous for the first song. I knew I’d sung the second song well and I thought maybe there would be a chance that I’d get some prize but I never expected Corn Uí Riada, not at all.

Corn Uí Riada, named after the composer Seán Ó Riada, takes place every year as part of the Oireachtas festival, which ran from 31 October to 4 November in Killarney, Co. Kerry.

There were 18 competitors in Corn Uí Riada. Only singers who have won first or second prize in the separate men’s and women’s sean-nós singing competitions from the previous five years, or who have previously won Corn Uí Riada, are eligible to compete.

Ní Chéileachair, who won the women’s competition in 2013, sang ‘Aisling Gheal’ and ‘Seán ’s a Bhríste Leathair’. Second prize went to Colm Jimmy Ó Curraoin from Na Minna, Indreabhán, Co. Galway, and third prize went to Bríd Ní Mhaoilchiaráin from Ruisín na Manach, Carna, Co. Galway.

Listen back to Ní Chéileachair singing ‘Aisling Gheal’ at 58:30 and at ‘Seán ’s a Bhríste Leathair’ 2:09:30 in the video below.

The winner of the women’s sean-nós singing competition this year was Adhna Ni Bhraonáin from Indreabhán, Co. Galway, and the winner of the men’s sean-nós competition was Irial Ó Ceallaigh from An Rinn in Waterford. Watch their winning performances below.
