Music and Opera Nominations Announced for IFTA and Irish Theatre Awards

The Second Violinist, Dubliners and Song of Granite among nominations.

The nominations have been announced for the Irish Film and Television Academy Film and Drama Awards and The Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards including nominations for composers and opera companies.

IFTA nominations for Original Music include: Ray Harman for The Farthest, Stephen McKeon for Pilgrimage, Stephen Rennicks for Maze, and John Gerard Walsh for The Drummer and The Keeper.

Song of Granite, a film about the life of sean-nós singer Joe Heaney, was not nominated in the music categories, but received nominations for Feature Film, Cinematography and Editing.

The Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards
Nominations in the Best Opera category of the Theatre Awards are: The Second Violinist (Landmark Productions and Wide Open Opera) with music by Donnacha Dennehy and written/directed by Enda Walsh; Handel’s Acis and Galatea (Opera Theatre Company); Front of House composed by Tom Lane to a libretto by Lily Akerman (Ulysses Opera Theatre/Cork Opera House); and Dubliners, composed by Andrew Synott to a libretto by Arthur Riordan (Opera Theatre Company).  

The Second Violinistdescribed by The Journal of Music as ‘anarchic and inventive’, is also nominated in a number of other categories in the Theatre Awards, including Best Director for Walsh, Best Actor for Aaron Monaghan, and Best Set Design for Jamie Vartan.


Nominated for Best Soundscape are Alan Darcy for Two Pints (Abbey Theatre), Tom Lane for Whitby (Bram Stoker Festival), Ben Delaney for Jimmy’s Hall (Abbey Theatre), and Mel Mercier for Far Away (Corcadorca).

The IFTA Awards take place on 15 February and the Irish Times Theatre Awards take place on 25 February at the National Concert Hall.
