Cal Folger Day – Act 2
‘Act 2’ is the new single from avant-pop artist Cal Folger Day and will feature in upcoming album Piece-dye, due for release in June via Dead Lady Records. The album is based on an interview the artist did with a distant aunt and Irish immigrant, Irene Nally. All lyrics in the record are verbatim quotes from the interview, in which Nally tells of her experience of arriving in New York in the post-war boom, and her observations, challenges and the cultural setting of the time and place. ‘Act 2’ is a bouncing track featuring syncopated rhythms, a strong bass line, and psychedelic synths and is accompanied by a colourful and idiosyncratic video including scenes set on a beach boardwalk, a crazy golf course, and a baseball field. Seosaimhín Ní Bheaglaíoch, Charlie Piggott, Gerry Harrington and Peter Browne – The Lark on the Strand
The Lark on the Strand is a recording of a traditional music concert made all the way back in 2000. In January of that year, singer Seosaimhín Ní Bheaglaíoch, Charlie Piggott (accordion), Gerry Harrington (fiddle) and Peter Browne (uilleann pipes) undertook a Music Network tour of Ireland. This recording was made of their concert in Gaelscoil na Cille in Ashbourne, Co. Meath, organised by Cultúrlann na Cille. The musicians write that the recording was ‘gradually forgotten over a twenty-year period. It surfaced again through a chance discovery, lying in a cardboard box in an attic during the pandemic lockdown period of 2020.’ The recording quality and performances are excellent, Ní Bheaglaíoch’s singing being a particular highlight. There are nineteen tracks featuring songs ‘Éamonn Mágáine’, ‘Amhrán Na Leabhar’ and ‘The Bonny Blue Eyed Lassie’, and solos, duets and trios from the three musicians. All well-known artists, this is a delightful and rather unique document of their ensemble playing and singing.

Sive – We Begin in Darkness
Singer-songwriter Sadhbh O’Sullivan, performing under the moniker Sive, has recently released a new album We Begin in Darkness. The 11-track record includes previously released singles ‘Winter’ and ‘Dancing Alone’ and is built on an acoustic, alt-folk sound. The songs ranging from the indie-influenced ‘Think Before I Speak’ to the piano ballad closing track ‘Annaghmakerrig’ were composed by O’Sullivan and recorded and produced at home by the artist along with producer Matt Harris. The album focuses on ideas of the dark and light that we experience as humans, touching on themes of place, death, judgement, anxiety and mythology. ‘Beira’ is a balmy highlight. Sive will perform at Workman’s Club in Dublin on 19 May to launch the album. Visit: https://www.sivemusic.com/

Téada – Coiscéim Coiligh / As the Days Brighten
Celebrating 21 years together, traditional music group Téada have just released their latest album Coiscéim Coiligh/As the Days Brighten on the Gael Linn label. For this recording, the group – Oisín Mac Diarmada, fiddle; Paul Finn, button accordion; Damien Stenson, flute; Seán Mc Elwain, guitar and bouzouki; Tristan Rosenstock, bodhrán; and Samantha Harvey, keyboard – are joined by American actor and musician John C. Reilly for a performance of the song ‘Eileen Óg’, as well as their regular singer Séamus Begley for a number of songs. The album is also notable for the range of new tune compositions, from composers Michael McCague, Dónal McCague, Damien Connolly, Johnny Óg Connolly, James Kelly, Ed Reavy, John Sheehan, Carl Hession, and one from Rosenstock titled ‘Farewell to Stoneybatter’. Among the highlights are a set beginning with a lesser-well known tune from Reavy, ‘The Women of Monaghan’ and a Donegal set beginning with ‘Paddy from Aghera’, which they learned from Dermot McLaughlin.

The Whileaways – Toss the Bobbin
‘Toss the Bobbin’ is the new song from acoustic folk act from Galway, The Whileaways – Noelie McDonnell, Noriana Kennedy and Nicola Joyce. The song features in the trio’s upcoming new album In All Honesty, due for release on 3 June. ‘Toss the Bobbin’ tells the story of the eighteenth-century tradition of lace making in Headford, Co. Galway, and the women who worked in the trade. It imagines the stories of four women who survived poverty and famine through bobbin lace-making, telling of the resilience and the sisterhood that existed between them. Subtle acoustic guitar, along with an atmospheric slide guitar, support the vocals of the three singers. The Whileaways will perform in towns across Ireland this summer including Tuam, Headford, Dingle, Dublin, Belfast, Inishbofin, Clonmel, and Clifden. Visit: https://www.thewhileawaysmusic.com/
