Pianist Kevin Jansson Wins €15k RDS Music Bursary

Flautist Amy Gillen awarded second prize worth €5k.

Cork pianist Kevin Jansson, who last year won the Frank Maher Classical Music Award, has been announced as the winner of the 2019 RDS Music Bursary, worth €15,000. Flautist Amy Gillen, who previously won an award at the James Galway Flute Festival in Switzerlandwas awarded second prize, the RDS Jado Award, which carries a bursary of €5,000.

Eighteen-year-old Jansson will use his prize to help fund his upcoming studies at the Juilliard School in Manhattan, New York, where he will study with Dr Veda Kaplinsky and Julian Martin.

Jansson studied at CIT Cork School of Music with Mary Beattie and has previously won the Jeune Chopin Competition in Switzerland and the Isidor Bajić Piano Memorial Competition in Serbia.

As part of the RDS prize, Jansson will perform with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and also give a recital in London in a partnership with the organisation Irish Heritage.

Amy Gillen is a graduate of the Royal Irish Academy of Music and is currently undertaking a Master’s degree in music performance at the Royal College of Music in London.

The RDS bursaries are open to winners of selected senior competitions in the ESB Feis Ceoil. Previous winners include Killian White, Sarah Brady, Aoife Gibney and Patrick Rafter.
