RTÉ to Broadcast New Series on Independent Labels

'Independent's Day' will be broadcast on 2XM from April and feature interviews with a range of artists and label owners.

A new radio show featuring interviews with independent label owners and artists starts on digital station RTÉ 2XM this spring, commencing on 22 April and running for 10 weeks.

Independent’s Day is the work of Galway-based radio producer Alan Meaney and will feature Home Beat, Raelach Records, Rusted Rail, Strange Brew, Farpoint Recordings, Art For Blind Records, Word Up Collective, Lyte Records, Rua Sound and Out on a Limb. Label founders will give an insight into how they choose what bands to sign, the vinyl revolution, the importance of artwork, Spotify, live shows and distributing music to Irish and international audiences.

Speaking to The Journal of Music, Meaney said he aimed to be as eclectic as possible, including a wide range of labels and artists.

I wanted to have a diverse amount of labels, representative of different genres. So there’s electronic, there’s hip hop, jazz, indie, folk, sound art. I wanted to show that, across Ireland, there’s a huge spectrum of independent music.

Artists featured include Limerick’s Windings, Gash Collective, DJ Ellll and songwriter Paddy Hanna sharing their experiences of the creative process and what it’s like to be working as an independent musician. Also featured are Alien She, Natalya O’Flaherty, Tebi Rex, Carriages, Let’s Set Sail, Shane Mulchrone, Saileog Ní Cheannabháin, Melana Gillard, Verse Chorus Verse, A Lilac Decline, Yawning Chasm, Junior Brother, Viv Corringham, Danny McCarthy, Touchy Subject, TMSV and Crayonsmyth.

The age of streaming
Meaney said that independent labels are using a range of ways to generate income in the age of streaming.

It’s a real thing of passion. They’re doing it because they love it, [though] they mightn’t be making a whole lot of money. Some of the labels that I spoke to… put on shows and manage bands. The Word Up Collective is a collection of bands… they manage acts and put on workshops in schools on writing hip hop.

Independent’s Day will air on RTÉ 2XM every Monday from 22 April at 1pm, and is repeated on Wednesdays at the same time. The schedule is as follows:

22 April – Art For Blind Records
29 April – Word Up Collective
6 May – Homebeat Presents
13 May –  Raelach Records
20 May – Lyte Records
27 May – Rusted Rail
3 June – Strange Brew
10 June – Farpoint Recordings
