Traditional Music Conference in Cork

Musicians' Congress to take place as part of Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal weekend.

As part of the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal competition weekend, which takes place in Cork on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 February, an event titled Comhdháil na gCeoltóirí – The Musicians’ Congress will take place on Saturday from 2 to 5pm.

The event will feature a range of speakers to discuss funding opportunities, publicity, insurance, copyright, marketing and publishing in the music industry. Speakers include Keith Johnson of IMRO, Antoine Ó Coileáin of Gael Linn, Caitríona Ní Bhaoill of RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, Labhrás Ó Murchú of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, and Catherine Boothman of the Arts Council. Those interested in attending should email claru [at] cuireadhchunceoil.ie.

Fifteen flute and whistle players will compete in the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal competition on Friday evening. The event will be broadcast live on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta. On Saturday night, a free concert will take place featuring several of the past winners of the medal, as well as this year’s winner.

Established by Peadar Ó Riada, the Seán Ó Riada competition focuses on a different instrument each year. Previous winners include fiddle players Aoife Ní Bhriain and Darragh Curtin, harper Oisín Morrison, uilleann piper Tiarnán Ó Duinnchinn and concertina player Cormac Begley.
