Local Choirs to Workshop Russian Orthodox Music

Choral groups in Louth and Mayo will be working closely with the chamber choir Resurgam this week, with a special focus on music from the Russian Orthodox choral tradition. ‘Local choirs will gain insights into a major but little-known repertory whilst improving their individual and collective technique and expressivity,’ say Resurgam.

The choirs will work with four singers from Resurgam, and Resurgam’s director Mark Duley. ‘The texts, the distinct textures of this music and the extraordinary dynamic and expressive range required together offer interesting ways of addressing issues of choral tone and sonority, and vocal technique and production,’ says the Dublin choir.

Resurgam is giving three evening performances in Dundalk (St Patrick’s Cathedral, 23 May, 8pm); Newport, County Mayo (St Patrick’s Church, 24 May, 8pm) and Dublin (City Hall, 25 May, 8pm) and works from these concerts will be studied in the choral workshops. Rachmaninov’s All Night Vigil, Tchaikovsky’s Otche Nash, Arvo Pärt’s Bogoróditse Djévo and Bortnyansky’s Ige Herouvimy all feature, as well as a new work, Cherubikon, by the Irish composer Garrett Sholdice.
