Dr Jimmy O’Brien Moran

A new lecture series on Irish traditional music, hosted by the Centre for Irish Studies at NUI Galway, starts on Tuesday, 21 February, at the Galway City Library at 6.30pm. The series is dedicated to the uilleann piper Martin Reilly, who was from East Galway and died in 1904.

The first lecture is by the Waterford uilleann piper Dr Jimmy O’Brien Moran and is titled ‘Folk Music Collecting in Galway Before the Famine’. O’Brien Moran will focus on the Galway piper Paddy Conneely and the people who collected his music, including George Petrie, the Hudson brothers, William Forde and Henry Westenra (Lord Rossmore). The talk will also mention Martin Reilly, whose life overlapped to some extent with Conneely’s.

Admission is free. A launch event will take place before the lecture, at 6.15pm. All are welcome.
