Niall Byrne Wins IFTA for Original Score

The Irish Film and Television Academy’s ‘Best Original Score’ award went to the composer Niall Byrne for his work on the film Loving Miss Hatto, which was screened on BBC1 last year. The film, written by Victoria Wood and directed by Aisling Walsh, is about the concert pianist Joyce Hatto who was found to have released recordings by other pianists under her own name.

The award was presented at a ceremony at the Convention Centre, Dublin, last Saturday. Other nominees in the category included Ray Harman for Love/Hate, Steve Lynch for Saving the Titanic and Stephen Rennicks for What Richard Did.

Byrne’s new score for the Irish silent film Guests of the Nation will show at the Barbican Centre, London, on 14 April. The score was commissioned by the Irish Film Archive to accompany the 1935 film, which was based on a Frank O’Connor story of the same name about a friendship between British soldiers and their IRA captors.
